Preventative Medicine, Vaccinations, and Wellness Care for Puppies & Kittens

puppy kitten care

At Black Creek Veterinary Hospital, our professional staff provides just what owners need to start a new puppy or kitten off on the right path for lifelong health. Our programs of young feline and canine wellness care account for any possible risks your new family member may face, with a comprehensive approach to preventing disease and maintaining your pet’s complete well-being.

Your Puppy or Kitten’s First Exam

When you bring a new pet into your family, it’s important to start thinking about a first visit to the vet. Our veterinarians recommend that new puppies and kittens receive their first exam and evaluation as early as 6-8 weeks of age. Owners with new animal companions older than this are not exempt from this rule! No matter how old your new pet is, it’s always very important that you have them checked by a veterinary professional immediately.

Your new friend’s first exam will be our best opportunity to detect and prevent any potential problems in the long term. We provide each pet with a thorough physical examination to check for fleas, worms, and any signs of health issues. We’ll also consult with you to identify the risks your animal companion may face over his or her lifetime. Moving on, this information will inform our decisions about the vaccinations and wellness care your pet will receive.

New Pet Vaccinations & Preventative Care

Once we’ve gotten to know you and your pet, we’ll start to discuss the best preventative measures to fit their individual needs. Our veterinarians recommend a series of vaccines to stimulate and maintain a strong immune response from the get-go. These include protection against:

  • Rabies
  • Distemper
  • Parvovirus
  • Hepatitis
  • Influenza combo
  • Kennel cough
  • Lyme disease (may be recommended)
  • Leptospirosis (may be recommended)
  • Feline leukemia and respiratory diseases

Your pet’s preventative care package will contain vaccinations most appropriate to their activities and environment. These will be spaced out over a series of visits to ensure effectiveness and minimal stress on your pet’s system. We’ll also include testing for parasites, any necessary de-worming, annual preventatives for heartworms, and flea and tick treatments if your companion will be spending time outdoors.

Spays & Neuters

At the time your pet receives his or her final vaccine boosters, we’ll start to discuss a spaying or neutering procedure. Having your pet fixed can have many advantages, but we understand the need for every pet owner to come to this decision independently. We hope you’ll consult with us to see what options are available, and encourage you to do your own research into spaying or neutering your pet.

Pet Microchipping

You may also elect to have your pet microchipped using the Home Again pet recovery system. This procedure is highly recommended for any companion animal, and can spare you, your family, and your pet a lot of unwanted stress if they should ever run away. This too is up to each owner to decide.

Working with you at every step, the veterinarians of Black Creek Veterinary Hospital will craft a program of care that fits your animal to a T, and works to keep them healthy for years to come. Get in touch to make your pet an appointment today.
